Is air compressor dangerous?

The air compressor itself does not belong to the dangerous goods defined in the catalogue of dangerous chemicals or the road transport rules for dangerous goods. It does not contain flammable, explosive, toxic or corrosive substances, and its main function is to compress and store air in the gas storage tank.

But there are potential security risks

although it is not legal dangerous goods, air compressor may cause safety accidents in case of improper use and management, such:

• high pressure risk: the pressure in the gas tank is usually 0. 7–1.0 MPa, overpressure or equipment aging may lead to physical explosion;
• mechanical injury: the lack of protection of running parts (such as pulley and coupling) is easy to cause accidents;
• electrical hidden danger: non explosion proof designed to ignite combustible gas when used in inflammable and explosive environment;
• noise and high temperature: long-term exposure affects hearing, and poor heat dissipation may cause local overheating.

Compliance Recommendations

according to the “special equipment safety law” and TSG 21-2016 “safety technical supervision regulations for fixed pressure vessels”, the gas tank with a volume ≥ 30L and a working pressure ≥ 0.1MPa is a special equipment and needs to be registered, regular inspection and operation by certified personnel. Daily inspection, pressure relief test and safety valve calibration should be carried out.
