Comparison between Scroll Compressors and Screw Compressors

Differences in Operating Principles

The scroll compressor relies on two involute‑shaped scrolls—one fixed and one orbiting—to form multiple sealed crescent‑shaped chambers, achieving gas compression through the continuous reduction of volume; the screw compressor, on the other hand, uses a pair of meshing male and female rotors that rotate, causing periodic changes in the inter‑tooth volume to complete intake, compression, and exhaust.

Performance and Application Scenarios

Scroll compressors feature a simple structure, low vibration, quiet operation, and high energy efficiency, making them suitable for small and medium‑sized commercial air conditioners, heat pumps, and precision refrigeration systems; screw compressors offer large single‑unit capacity, a wide modulation range, and high reliability, and are widely used in large central air conditioning systems, industrial refrigeration, and low‑temperature cold storage facilities, among other medium‑ and high‑pressure applications.

Maintenance and Service Life

  • Scroll compressors have no vulnerable moving parts (such as bearings or valves), experience minimal wear, and require long maintenance intervals;
  • Screw compressors necessitate regular replacement of lubricating oil, oil filters, and timing gears, with higher demands for lubrication and cleanliness;
  • Under comparable operating conditions, high‑quality scroll compressors can achieve a service life of 80,000–100,000 hours, while screw compressors typically last 60,000–80,000 hours, depending on load and maintenance practices.

Selecting the Right Compressor

When making a selection, it is essential to consider cooling capacity requirements, energy efficiency standards, installation space, operational stability, and total life‑cycle costs. For small, constant‑temperature systems, scroll compressors are preferred; for continuous high‑load operations, varying load conditions, or applications requiring parallel unit configurations, screw compressors are more appropriate.
