Is the air compressor room a dangerous place for explosion?

Whether the air compressor room is an explosion hazard site shall be comprehensively judged in combination with specific working conditions and specifications.

1. Explosion Risk Sources

The air compressor room itself does not directly produce combustible gas, but there are potential explosion risk factors, including:

  • Compressed air mixed with oil vapor (oil injection screw type) or combustible dust;
  • Equipment overheating, carbon deposits cause spontaneous combustion (especially in secondary exhaust pipes or aftercoolers);
  • Electrical equipment not according to the explosion-proof requirements of selection, in case of combustible environment may become the ignition source;
  • Storage tank overpressure, corrosion or safety valve failure resulting in physical explosion.

2. specification judgment basis

According to the Explosive Atmospheres Part 1: General Requirements for Equipment (GB/T 3836.1) and the Code for Fire Protection in Building Design (GB 50016), whether or not an explosion hazardous area is classified depends on the presence of continuous, long-term or incidental releases of combustible substances. The conventional air compressor room isnot classified as an explosion hazard placeif there is no flammable process medium involved, no dust accumulation and good ventilation, but it is still a Class C plant with high fire risk.

3. safety recommendations

Regardless of whether it is classified as an explosion hazard site, it should be implemented: regularly clean up oil stains and carbon deposits, ensure that pressure relief and alarm devices are effective, electrical equipment meets IP protection and explosion-proof grade requirements, and carry out risk identification and emergency drills.
