Variable-frequency air compressors match air demand by adjusting motor speed, theoretically enabling stepless speed control and eliminating frequent starts and stops. Therefore,under normal operating conditions, variable-frequency compressors typically do not require periodic “unloading”—they automatically reduce speed and discharge pressure at low loads to maintain stable system pressure.
Under what circumstances might “unloading” occur?
- When air consumption is extremely low (close to zero) and falls below the minimum discharge volume corresponding to the inverter’s lowest operating frequency, some models enter a “sleep” or “no-load unloading” mode to save energy;
- if the control system is set with an unloading pressure threshold (e.g., unloading triggered at 0.85 MPa), this logic is more common in line-frequency machines; variable-frequency units generally favor “constant-pressure variable-frequency” control;
- equipment malfunctions, sensor drift, or improper parameter settings may lead to abnormal unloading, requiring troubleshooting.
The key to determining whether this is normal
is to observe whether unloading is accompanied by significant pressure fluctuations, frequent switching (e.g., every 1–2 minutes), or occurs within medium-to-high load ranges—if so, it is abnormal, and you should check the pressure sensor, PID parameters, pipeline leaks, or sources of fluctuating air demand.
