In the design of industrial plant and the deployment of air pressure system, reasonable setting of safe distance around air compressor is the key link to ensure personnel safety, convenient equipment maintenance and compliance with national mandatory standards.
I. Core basis: GB 50029 code for design of compressed air stations
according to current national standardsGB 50029 -2014 design specification for compressed air stationarticle 4.2.3 and article 5.1.5, the minimum clear distance between the air compressor unit and the wall, other equipment or operation channel shall be maintained:
- unit front (Operation side): ≥1.5 m to ensure daily inspection, filter replacement and emergency shutdown operation space;
- back and both sides (non-operating side): ≥0.8 m to meet the needs of heat dissipation and ventilation and basic maintenance;
- when multiple units are arranged side by side: The center distance of adjacent units should be ≥ 2.0 m to avoid airflow interference and heat built-up.
II. Associated security requirements
in addition to the installation spacing, synchronization is also required to meet:
- pressure vessel safety: air storage tank of air compressor is a fixed pressure vessel, which must comply with TSG 21-2016 safety technical supervision regulations for fixed pressure vessels. It is forbidden to pile flammable materials around it, and independent pressure relief channels should be set;
- fire fighting and evacuation: The equipment area should be included in the overall fire protection zone, and the straight line distance from the safety exit ≤ 30 m, and keep barrier-free access no less than 1.2 m wide;
- noise and Vibration Isolation: it is recommended to install anti-vibration pad on the air compressor base, and avoid setting precision instruments or office areas within 1 m around.

IV. Implementation recommendations
the design phase should be combined with the comprehensive layout of plant structure, ventilation path and emergency evacuation moving line; The third party with qualification should conduct spacing review and registration of pressure vessels during acceptance. Do not compress the security distance on the grounds of “tight space”-compliance is not a cost, but a bottom line.
